Imagine what it’s like to be a “gaymer”—a gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans person active in the video game community. You fire up your Xbox 360, put on your headset and sit back for what you think will be just another game of Halo or Call of Duty. But an otherwise great game experience can be ruined by other players getting downright nasty, insulting and even homophobic.

It’s really cool to be able to play games online with people you may never meet in person. But since your identity is anonymous, it’s almost too easy to forget that you’re playing against an ACTUAL person with feelings, just like yourself. Smack talk can quickly turn ugly and before you know it, people are hiding behind their avatars and hurling insults like “faggot” over the headset.

If you’re a gaymer, you should know that there are safe spaces online where you can share your passion for video games with other gaymers.
