About six months ago, while doing some online research, I came across a website that talked about virginity and secondary virginity. I had never heard of secondary virginity before, so this caught my attention right away. Having lost my virginity only weeks before, regretting it, and then finally taking a pregnancy test (that came out negative), I decided that it was something I wanted to do. I knew that secondary virginity didn’t mean I was technically a virgin again, but that it was a fresh start, and a chance to change and learn to respect and love my body. Since discovering this idea, I have not had sex; Not orally, anally, or by any other means.

As a result of choosing this lifestyle, I am more confident, strong, and open with my boyfriend. He doesn’t understand my choice, but he respects it nonetheless. He is a virgin himself, and that is not going to change as long as we’re not married. After telling him about my commitment, we have been able to go out, do things, and just be together, knowing that we don’t have to worry about unplanned pregnancy, STDs or regretting doing anything sexual. We find other ways of expressing our love for one another; sex isn’t the only way to tell someone that.

Everyone I have talked to had never heard of such an idea. Most of them believe in technically being a virgin, and that’s it. But I plan to inform the people out there who have made some mistakes, as all of us do, that there is hope, and there is something you can do. Because making just one mistake can change everything, and for those of us who have been there, and who want to turn it around, there is a way. I refer to myself as a secondary virgin and I am proud, because without the confidence that just being able to say that gives me, I might not be the same person I am today.
