This guy I know says sex is better when he gets drunk first. Is that true?

This is one of the most common myths out there about alcohol and drugs. It applies to other substances, like Ecstasy and pot, too.

Alcohol and drugs do NOT make sex better--what's going on is that these drugs affect the way we're feeling. Alcohol can make us feel less uncomfortable in a social situation--which can be REALLY bad in a sexual situation.

The reason why people become less uncomfortable is because alcohol slows down their brains. Alcohol makes it harder to make a decision about whether you really want to do something sexual. It makes it really difficult to remember how to use a condom. And it can make you forget, so that after the fact you don't know whether you might've gotten someone pregnant the night before or been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Alcohol can actually keep guys from getting or keeping an erection, and lower girls' sex drives, too. So can pot and other drugs. Some drugs, including pot, can affect a person's ability to get pregnant or cause a pregnancy in the future.
