I found a Web site that teaches you how to become anorexic. Can you really learn how to have an eating disorder?

The Web site you are describing sounds like something that came to be known as “pro-ana” or “pro-mia.” Around 2001, Web sites were created as a way for people with anorexia or bulimia to connect with one another. They were not meant to promote anorexia or bulimia and they weren’t meant to push people to get help. They were a way for people who suffered from anorexia or bulimia to discuss what they were going through and to help them to not feel alone. This is kind of like how Sex, Etc. gives teens a way to connect about what they are facing concerning sexuality.

Over time, some of these Web sites shifted to what is called “pro-ana” or “pro-mia” sites. They say support the idea of people trying to be thin by starving themselves or making themselves purge (or vomit) the food they eat. They may include sections called “Thinspiration,” featuring pictures of emaciated models or actors that “inspire” people to stop eating so that they can be as thin as possible. They may also include dangerously low-calorie diets, the promotion of the abuse of diet pills and laxatives and ways to hide the fact that someone has been forcing themselves to throw up.

To be clear, someone cannot “learn” how to have an eating disorder, being anorexic or bulimic is psychological and is much deeper and more complicated than wanting to lose weight.

If you or someone you know has an eating disorder, you should know that they or you deserve to get help. Talk to a trusted adult about yourself or your friend, and let your friend know that you care about them. As a start, you can check out Something Fishy or call their hotline to find out about treatment options. Their number is 1-866-690-7239. Or check out other resources on our Web site.
