What is a gynecologist, and when should I go?

A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in women’s reproductive and sexual health care. A gynecologist does routine exams and runs tests, like the Pap Smear, to check for things like cervical cancer. Many gynecologists are also obstetricians, meaning they take care of pregnant women and deliver babies. Gynecologists also prescribe birth control, do pregnancy and STD (sexually transmitted disease) tests and provide treatment for STDs.

One of the best ways a girl can protect her sexual and reproductive health is to have regular visits with a gynecologist. It is best for a girl to talk to a gynecologist before she starts having sex so that she can ask him or her any questions she might have and get birth control if she needs it. The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends every girl see a gynecologist (even if just to talk) for the first time between 13 and 15 years of age. If you don’t go then, it is very important that you see a health care professional who can test you for STDs yearly after you begin having sexual intercourse. Regardless of her sexual history, a woman should have her first pelvic exam (that includes a Pap smear) by the age of 21.

It’s a good idea to establish a relationship with your health care provider, whether it’s a gynecologist or nurse practitioner, before you really need him or her. That way, when you have concerns or questions, you have someone you trust who can help.
