Capacity to Consent

This is a legal term that means you have the ability to understand information given to you about the medical service you are going to receive, and make a decision using that information.

For example, if you were five years old you would not have the capacity to consent to a medical service since you wouldn't understand what was going to happen. But most people between 12 -18 have the capacity to consent to most medical services, like family planning services.
