1.     What is Sex, Etc.?

Sex, Etc. is an award-winning national magazine and Web site on sexual health that is written by teens, for teens, and published by Answer at Rutgers University. The teen editorial staff that writes Sex, Etc. gives teens honest and comprehensive information about sexual health—info they might have a hard time getting elsewhere.

2.     Who gets Sex, Etc.?

Each issue of Sex, Etc. is distributed to 30,000 students in the United States. Most students receive the magazine as part of their health classes. Copies are also distributed through many youth-serving community organizations throughout the U.S., and some teens subscribe.

3.     How popular is the Web site?

The Web site gets more than 20,000 unique visitors per day, and includes topic areas like GLBTQ, Deciding about Sex, Birth Control and Condoms, and features like forums, polls, videos and more.

4.     How many times a year is Sex, Etc. published?

The magazine comes out three times a year—in the fall, winter and spring. The editorial staff helps produce all three issues. They also write stories and create other content for the Web site.

5.     What will I do as an art contributor?

You will submit your photos or illustrations to our award-winning magazine and Web site. We will review them for possible publication. If your photo or illustration is published, you will be paid $50.

6.     How do I submit my photos or illustrations?

Save your photos or illustration in a JPEG form, attach it to your e-mail and send it to us at sexetc@rci.rutgers.edu. Be sure to write "Artistic Submission" in the subject line.

7.     What kind of photos or illustrations do you want?

Sex, Etc. needs many different types of artwork. Photos and illustrations highlight stories from the 16 topic areas of the Web site (Girls' Health, Guys' Health, Sex, GLBTQ, Love & Relationships, etc.) and other areas. If you think your illustration would work well with a topic area or story, then send it in with your suggestion. For example, the story Staying Straight: Plenty of Teens Do Without Drugs and Drinking does not have a photo or illustration. What would you create to go along with this story? There are literally hundreds of stories on the Web site that need photos or illustrations. Take a look through them and get creative!

8.     What’s in it for me?

You will have a chance to create art or photography that makes a difference. Teen readers tell us that Sex, Etc. helps them make better choices about sex, relationships and the future. You also get a chance to honestly explore important topics about sexuality. And you will be paid $50 for each story we publish.

9.     How long can I be a contributor?

As long as you're a teen who's 19 or younger, you can contribute.
