"A school is supposed to educate kids. They [teachers and school officials] are supposed to give them information and they're never supposed to lie to them. And they were failing in all of these duties. They were lying to kids. They were giving them information that wasn't correct and denying them information that could save their lives." —Shelby Knox, 20

Shelby Knox served on the Lubbock Youth Commission while she was in high school and fought for comprehensive sex education in her school. She is currently a junior at the University of Texas, majoring in political science and minoring in political communications.
Shelby writes for a collegiate feminist magazine called The F-Word and is a contributor to Sex, Etc. She is active in both the University Democrats and Voices for Choice chapters on her campus. She recently testified before the Texas State Board of Education in an effort to convince them to adopt more comprehensive sex ed texts for health classes.
Shelby Knox is currently traveling around the nation to raise awareness about the lack of comprehensive sex education in schools, using the film that carries her name – The Education of Shelby Knox – as a vehicle for discussion.

taught whatever people are doing. We should learn about gay
sex, straight sex, oral, anal, vaginal, and any other kind
you can think of (there probably isnt any other kind lol)!!

I was aware of most of this tragedy, but I wasn't aware that
many abstinence-only ed programs existed outside of
mega-conservative Utah. I was also not aware that I could
realistically do something about it. I've been inspired to
take up this fight against ignorance in my area!
very nice
