Tommy is a young man who works hard to make it to graduation, to be a good friend and a good boyfriend, and to raise his three sisters. On his 18th birthday, Tommy must reckon with both his past and his future to define for himself what it means to become a man.

Earlaina Kemp is an honor student and President of the Senior Class at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She wrote her script, MANchild, as an assignment for her teacher Rik York in his Language Arts class. Earlaina hopes that the film she created with director Rawson Marshall Thurber can provide both an analytical as well as a positive alternative to more stereotypical depictions of black masculinity.
